Two-factor authentication (2FA) makes logging in with eHerkenning even more secure

EH2 is one of the trust levels of eHerkenning and is supplemented by two-factor authentication. This is a recommendation from the National Cyber Security Center, part of the Ministry of Justice and Security. This will make logging in with an EH2-login tool extra secure and reliable, allowing entrepreneurs to do online business with (government) service providers without worries. We would like to explain why this change is taking place and what will change on January 1, 2024.

Two-factor authentication: new standard requirement
eHerkenning is being continuously developed. In order to continue to meet reliability standards and security requirements, the current EH2login tool must be expanded to include two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication is an additional layer of security during the login process. This additional security is designed to ensure that you are the only person who can log in. In addition to entering your username and password, you need a second factor (way). This can be in the form of an SMS code sent to your smartphone, for example, or with a one-time password.

Safer login
Two-factor authentication is thus more secure than using only a password. Access to your eHerkenning-login tool cannot be obtained by just retrieving the password. To gain access, a malicious person must also be in possession of a physical element such as your phone at the same time. This reduces the chances of a malicious person succeeding in accessing your eHerkenning-login tool. After implementing two-factor authentication, an EH2-login tool meets the new standard in terms of security. This way, service providers know for sure who you are and that you are allowed to share sensitive information, such as medical, financial or personal data.

January 1, 2024
From January 1, 2024, it will no longer be possible to purchase eHerkenning EH2 without two-factor authentication. For new service providers, who want to make their services and products available online with eHerkenning , two-factor authentication will be the minimum security requirement from January 1, 2024.

What to do if you use login tool EH2?

2. Check that the registered email address and mobile number are still up to date.
3. Are these details not correct? Read here how to change the e-mail address and/or mobile number:

Would you like to switch to 2FA right now? Then you can upgrade your eHerkenning upgrade to EH2+ or higher.
